CEDENNA Leads Innovation in Chile

March 24, 2026

  • The Center ranks as the top institution linked to the university world in innovation, surpassed only by a state entity (INIA).

The Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (CEDENNA) has moved into second place nationally in innovation in the SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR) 2026, cementing its position as Chile’s leading university benchmark in innovation.

The SIR innovation indicator assesses the performance of universities and research centers based on their ability to generate patents and transfer scientific knowledge into technological applications.

“This recognition validates a way of working that brings together science, technology, industry, and public policy. Chile needs to move toward a knowledge-based economy, and nanotechnology is a key tool for generating innovation with productive and social impact,” said CEDENNA’s director, Dora Altbir, who is also Director of Institutional Projects at Universidad Diego Portales.

Since its founding in 2009, CEDENNA has worked to close the gap between science and technology. It operates more than 20 laboratories carrying out advanced research, along with the country’s only nanosafety laboratory, which has kept it at the forefront of innovation.

The SCImago ranking, which combines indicators of research, innovation, and social impact, uses patent and scientific publication data to measure how knowledge translates into concrete technological advances and impact on society.
